Saint Benilde booters dethrone Red Lions

MANILA, Philippines—Saint Benilde nipped San Beda, 1-0,Wednesday to end the Red Booters’ eight-year NCAA title run in men’s football at the PhilSports pitch in Pasig City.

Jan Philip Dalaota scored on a header in the 20th minute and the Blazers, compact and organized on defense, hung on to finally capture the crown that has eluded them since they joined the league 12 years ago.

The Bukidnon-born Dalaota, a Human Resource Management sophomore, pounced on a free kick from Patrick Millan to deliver the game-winning goal.

Mentored by Marlon Maro, the Taft booters, who finished with an 8-1-1 (win-loss-draw) record, also captured majority of the individual awards with Lois Madro named as MVP, Justin Paluga as best defender and Benito Rosalio as best goalkeeper.

Two-time MVP Jinggoy Valmayor struck twice as La Salle Green Hills blanked San Beda, 3-0, for its eighth juniors’ title. Cedelf P. Tupas
